Ancient African Universities

The earliest known African university is the University of Sankore, which was founded in Timbuktu, Mali in the 15th century. The university was a center of Islamic learning and was renowned for its library, which contained thousands of manuscripts. The university was destroyed in the 16th century by Moroccan invaders, but its legacy lives on in the form of the Timbuktu Manuscripts, which are now housed in libraries around the world. Other ancient African universities include Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt, which was founded in 970 CE, and the University of Al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, Morocco, which was founded in 859 CE and the University of Timbuktu in Mali (founded in 12th century).
